The Truman Show is one of those movies that has loomed large basically all my life; I've seen it referenced countless times but had never actually seen it until now.
I really enjoyed it. Jim Carrey plays Truman, a man who was adopted by a corporation at birth and unknowingly is the star of a TV show documenting his life. His every move is recorded and broadcast to the world, everyone in his town is an actor, and as the show approaches its 30th anniversary Truman starts to see the cracks in the production: a skylight falls in front of him, it rains only on him, the radio glitches and he hears the production crew talking.
Truman quickly becomes suspicious and tries to leave the island, while the crew gets more and more desperate to keep up the facade. It's listed as a comedy-drama, but there are few laugh out loud moments, and in this age of mass surveillance where it feels like our every move is recorded by some agency or another, it feels more relevant than ever. The Truman Show is a great watch.
